Unlike initial psychometric testing to learn about an employee's work style and motivators, performance appraisals are an ongoing process of dialogue between the employee and manager about performance, helping you to set achievable and measurable goals.

Performance Appraisals - The Process

At their most basic level, performance appraisals begin with a manager and employee setting goals for the quarter and year ahead. The most effective goals are those that are measurable and have easy to understand performance standards. The employee then self discovers the actions that are needed to meet the goal and what indicators will be used to see if they are on track to meeting their goals.

Performance appraisals rely on regular informal feedback by the manager to their employee, as well as more formal quarterly meetings where performance is reviewed. At the end of each financial year, a formal meeting is held to review performance over the past year. Many organisations reward their staff based on performance and find that a performance appraisal is a key measurement tool.
